Weeks 5-8: Literacy Focus Points: Answer-Proof-Extend (APE), Media Analysis - Lifestyle Advertising, and Report Writing (Summary)
Students will focus more closely on literacy skills, many of which are connected to the OSSLT test. Through written summaries and a 5Ws report students will show their awareness of the key elements of effective written communication of main points and supporting details. An oral presentation and APE responses based on research about lifestyle advertising will support students' development of both active listening and effective speaking skills.

Weeks 9-12: The Memoir - Non-Fiction Unit
Literacy Focus Points: Extended - Literature based APE Responses, Non-Fiction Reading Strategies, News Article, Vocabulary Building
As students extend their understanding of providing specific textual support for their arguments, we will move into the non-fiction unit and work on close reading and questioning skills. Students will be asked to deepen their understanding of non-fiction events by working on the Big Three Questions, which encourage them to identify points of view, bias, underlying assumptions, and challenges in reading. These questions will help engage students in more active reading processes, ensuring higher comprehension and retention of key ideas. They will become better able to defend a position by providing substantive evidence in support of ideas.
